Mr. Stein’s role at Typhon Access LLC is the development and management of the Hydra Manager Platform, with an emphasis on, operational and legal structuring, manager selection, and developing and expanding networks of potential clients.
Prior to Typhon Access LLC, Mr. Stein was a managing director with Parker Global Strategies, where he was member of the investment, implementation and portfolio committees. From July 2005 through October 2007 Mr. Stein was the CIO and a member of AlphaMetrix Investment Advisors, the alternative investments manager platform based in Chicago. Before that Mr. Stein was previously the Chief Strategic Officer of Efficient Capital Management, a multi-manager advisory firm and FOF based in suburban Chicago, where he also served as the Chairman of the firm’s Investment Committee. Prior to Efficient he was a director with Rotella Capital Management, a trading advisory firm.
After being trained to make markets in options and futures in 1986 and 1987, Mr. Stein turned to financial journalism, serving as the Senior Editor with Futures Magazine from 1987 through 1990. During his law studies, Mr. Stein served as a consultant to various industry firms and authored a text on foreign exchange trading, Trading Currency Cross Rates, published by John Wiley & Sons in 1993. Mr. Stein practiced law with two law firms in Chicago, including Katten Muchin & Zavis, specializing in the formation of hedge funds, futures funds, and trading businesses as well as related litigation.
Mr. Stein holds a B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin, and a J.D. from Chicago Kent College of Law. He is currently a member of the Illinois Bar.
Melvin Bacani CTO / Director of Operations
Melvin has worked using technology in the finance industry since 1995 and has a successful history of creating efficient, stable platforms that leverage data analytics. He also served as the CIO of Leeward Pointe Capital, a Natural Gas CTA Melvin helped start.
Most recently, Melvin worked at Citadel where he managed the Market Data team for the Energy Desk and the technology for the Natural Gas and Meteorology teams. There, he reengineered their processes creating more stable systems and increased the speed and availability of information to the quantitative researchers and traders.
Prior to Citadel, he was the Business Intelligence / Technical Lead at Morgan Stanley and helped establish their Web Intelligence team where his background in data mining techniques and analytic reporting was used to build a platform to analyze client behavior on their secure website.
Before that, Melvin was at Data Mining Systems, a small analytics company that also ran a couple books out of Deutsche Bank. There, he researched and developed systematic trading models and also managed the front / back end technologies for their trading operations.
Previous to this, he joined Morgan Stanley's newly established Data Mining and Artificial Intelligence team. There, he helped building some of the first machine learning and data analytic applications which were used to analyze trading models, asset management strategies, and accounting data. He also created an Executive Information System for their Private Wealth Management group to allow them to evaluate customer profitability as well as sales person performance utilizing a custom built web based analysis tool.
Melvin received his degree in pure mathematics from the University of Michigan. He is also a graduate of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Melvin has also completed the Series 3 - National Commodity Futures Examination and the Series 30 - NFA Branch Manager Examination.
Tim Onufrock General Counsel
Mr. Onufrock is the General Counsel for Typhon Access and has more than 23 years of experience in the financial services industry and in founding, leading and guiding an array of businesses. Most recently Mr. Onufrock held senior roles in private equity and some high growth firms. Prior to that, he has served as a senior officer at PowerShares and was primarily involved with the listing and launch of over 85 ETFs. As in house counsel, Mr. Onufrock was responsible for the all licensing and transactional matters, the firm’s intellectual property, and was active in the firms’ PowerShares QQQ project. Prior to that, Mr. Onufrock served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Efficient Capital Management a mid-sized fund-of-funds and manager-of-managers focused on Global Macro and FX strategies which allocated $2B of nominal AUM. He also served as Assistant General Counsel to a $450M+ family office with a focus on its financial services holdings (e.g. First Trust Portfolios and Fitch Investors Services).
Mr. Onufrock earned a Bachelors of Arts from Wheaton College and a Juris Doctor from Washington University in St. Louis.
Paul Moran Managing Director
Paul is Managing Director for Typhon Access and heads the distribution relationships for the Hydra Platform. Prior to Typhon Access, Paul was Senior Vice President of Bn2 Capital Holdings, an alternative energy production facility in southern Illinois. Prior to this, Paul spent five years at PFG where he served as Director of Managed Futures. There he served on the investment committee, developed the managed futures business for the firm and was responsible for developing the manager database, portfolio construction and screening managers. Prior to PFG, Paul also served as a Senior Bank Official with the Bank of Ireland. He worked on the Mid-Am and CBOT floors specifically in the 30 year bond pit. He was the COO of RCG/Quantum Financial Services for seven years in Taiwan. Upon his return to the U.S. Paul served as Senior Foreign Exchange Dealer with The Chicago Corporation/ABN Amro in Chicago, and later as a Managing Director of FX for Rosenthal Collins Group in Chicago. In addition to operating his his own trading and consultancy business Paul was one of Gerson Lehrman’s top consultants for many years.
Paul graduated from Clongowes Wood College and University at RCT Galway (GMIT) in Ireland. He holds the Series 3 and 34 licenses, and is conversant in French and Mandarin.
